Chapter 19

For a second, I wondered if I was dreaming. Was this all a fantasy I’d concocted in my head? Ty couldn’t really be looking at me with that glow in his eyes—as if I’d caused it.

“Yes.” I searched his eyes. “Yes, it is a crazy idea.”

“Why?” His hand drifted down from my cheek and came to rest on my shoulder. “Is it because I’m not what you want me to be? Is that why you’ve fought so hard not to feel the way you do about me?”

“It’s not you.” I winced at the idea that he could think that. “Ty, you amaze me. Especially with the way that you work with kids. But it’s not like we know each other well. It’s not like any of this makes sense. I know what you think of me. I know that you think I’m some spoiled rich kid that couldn’t possibly grasp the world you’ve lived in.”

“You don’t know anything about what I think. Nothing at all.” He wrapped his hand around the back of my neck and looked straight into my eyes. “I don’t care about our differences, Apple. When I look at you, I see a person that fights for what’s right, that sees the invisible and doesn’t let things that are wrong get swept under the rug. Yes, I want to know more about you, but that won’t change the way I feel. I feel the way I do because of who you are—no matter what the rest of your story is. Do you think you could feel the same way about me?”

“I don’t know your story. Not even a little.” I took his free hand and gave it a gentle squeeze. “I want to, but you haven’t said more than a few words about yourself to me. You tell me I hide, but I feel like you’ve got this wall around you, one that you won’t ever let anyone cross.”

“You’re already on the other side.” He pulled me closer as he gazed into my eyes. “I didn’t invite you in—I didn’t even know there was a way to get in—but one second I was alone and the next, I wasn’t.” He took a breath then shook his head as he exhaled. “Now that you’re here, I never want to be alone again. I know you’re right. It doesn’t make any sense.” He looked back at me. “But I don’t care if it makes sense. All I know is that I want you.” He whispered his words as his fingertips stroked my cheek again. “I don’t want to rush it. I don’t want to draw you into something that you really don’t want. But I’m also not going to lie to you. I’m all in, Apple—head to toe. I’ll do whatever it takes to be with you.”

My heart pounded as his words echoed through my mind. Not long before, I had myself convinced that he would never want to be with me; now he spoke as if he never wanted to be without me.
